Is Your Business Website (Unintentionally) Linked to Porn Sites? It Might Be

Updated: Apr 19

Have you looked at your website lately?

I'm not talking about a quick scan through; I'm talking about really reading through the content and click through each link.

If you haven't done so recently, you should. Here's why.

My Search for a Local House Cleaner

Recently, I was searching online for a local house cleaner.

I came across a listing for house cleaning services in my area, so I clicked on the website to learn more.

When I clicked on their services page, this is what I read (FYI: I've removed the business name and contact information to protect their privacy).

I couldn't believe my eyes and had to go back and re-read the first sentence again.

To be honest, I was surprised and and a little shocked at what I had just read and continued to see what other surprises were on the page. What I found were two links to phony websites.

I checked two more pages and found more links embedded in the website that linked to scammer websites.

I immediately called the number listed on the website and was able to get a hold of the business owner.

I introducing myself and asked her if they knew that her about page said, "free porno - Girl******Guys."

After a long gasp, the owner said "WHAT?!?"

That was my initial response too!

After a short discussion, the business owner said she would get the language and links fixed ASAP.

Two days later, I went back to the website to find that the porno language and link had been removed, but each and every bad link was still there!

I went through each page, one-by-one and highlighted every bad link I could find and sent them via email to the business owner. A few weeks later, the website was finally updated with new content and updated business information.

While the problem was ultimately fixed, how many people like me had searched for local housecleaners only to find a website that looked like a fake business? How many clients were lost?
