When Anna, co-owner of Khyber Pass Zarparan was a young girl, she would help her grandmother prepare Mantu. The traditional Afghan style beef and lentil dumpling dish, dressed in a savory split pea and saffron sauce and topped with a garlic yogurt was her grandmother’s favorite dish. While it has been many years since the days of Anna helping her grandmother prepare Mantu for family and guests, the memory of that experience remains fresh in her mind. Today, Anna and her husband Cyrus make the dumplings from scratch, using Anna’s grandmother’s recipe. The restaurant, which is located in the heart of San Diego’s Hillcrest Neighborhood, has a wide variety of traditional Afghan cuisine. Through our brand California Date Night, we partnered with Anna to help tell her family’s story during the COVID-19 pandemic.
